CLERGY at a cathedral have attempted to recreate the nativity scene as it may have looked more than 2,000 years ago.

Ripon Cathedral’s traditional nativity figures have been installed in its seventh century Saxon underground crypt due to its similarities to the Bethlehem stable where Jesus was born.

Canon Elizabeth Sewell said: “Jesus’ birthplace would probably have been a cave-like space beneath the house.

“Animals were have overwintered there, giving some warmth to the home above.

“The crypt is a similar space, designed by St Wilfrid as a place for prayer and reflection.”

Visitors to the crypt are being invited to add their own prayers to the nativity scene, and written prayers are available for visitors to take away.

The cathedral is open daily from 8.30am to 6pm.
