A CHRISTMAS event to raise money for a council chairman’s chosen charity proved a success.

Local businesses and Durham County Council staff set up stalls in Durham’s County Hall to sell gifts and goods, with proceeds and donations going to the Butterwick Hospice and the Treetops children’s ward at the University Hospital of North Durham – the chosen charities of Councillor Pauline Charlton in her year as council chairman.

Coun Charlton said: “It’s wonderful to see the hidden talents of staff, showcasing what they can do in their spare time whilst raising money for my two chosen charities.”

Durham Youth Offending Service sold Christmas wreaths made by young people in the service and Denise Hill, from the council’s adult services department, had many people wanting her hand-made gifts for the home.
