AN APPEAL has been launched to help needy children and vulnerable adults at Christmas.

The Salvation Army in Durham has started its annual toy appeal, asking people to buy an extra gift and leave it in a donation bin under the clock in the city’s Market Hall.

Shoppers are asked to donate toys, soft toys, colouring books and crayons for children, as well as practical gifts such as scarves, gloves and hats for vulnerable adults.

All gifts will be handed out at The Salvation Army’s Sanctuary 21, on Saddler Street.

The appeal mirrors one in Darlington which has been backed by the family of three-year-old Danny Wake, who died after a suspected hit-and-run incident in the town last month.

Cor van der Woude, a lieutenant with The Salvation Army in Durham, said: “As everyone’s getting ready for Christmas, we ask that you spare a thought for those who are struggling.

“Even the smallest gift can make a real difference.”
