A MP has raised concerns in Parliament about the location of two wind turbines on the eve of a community event to outline the proposals in east Cleveland.

Redcar MP Ian Swales spoke out against proposals for two wind turbines near the conservation villages of Yearby, Wilton and Kirkleatham.

He said the site for the two 140 metre turbines is too close to a number of grade 1 and 2 listed buildings and contain many areas of significant historical interest.

Speaking during questions to Eric Pickles, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Mr Swales asked the minister if he supported building turbines larger than the London Eye in conservation areas.

Mr Swales said: “I completely support renewable energy sources in appropriate locations, including wind turbines, but it is absolutely unacceptable that two 140 metre turbines which are larger than the London Eye should be placed in the heart of a conservation area.

“I have spoken to many local residents who have expressed concerns about the impact of the turbines on the natural landscape. We already have 27 wind turbines just a mile from the beach and many residents are now telling me that enough is enough."

An information day is being held for residents in Lazenby Village Hall between 1pm and 7pm tomorrow (Wednesday, November 27) when representatives from applicants for one of the turbines on land southeast of Turners Arm Farm in Yearby, near Redcar, Airvolution Energy, will be there to speak to them.
