MESSAGES of love and support have poured in from around the world for an 'exceptionally poorly' teenager as he continues treatment following a cancer relapse.

Kieran Maxwell, from Heighington, near Darlington, was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer in 2010.

Despite losing his left leg at the knee, the youngster went into remission and began competing in disabled gymnastics competitions.

Kieran and his family received the heartbreaking news that he had suffered a relapse earlier this year.

The 15-year-old is currently undergoing intensive high-dose chemotherapy treatment at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle.

Following the initial diagnosis, his parents set up the Kieran Maxwell Fund, to raise money for Kieran's treatment and prosthetic limbs.

Posting on the trust's Facebook page, Kieran's mother, Nicola, wrote: "These past few days have been horrible to say the least, as Kieran has been exceptionally poorly and I have been concentrating on him.

"This is all due to the chemotherapy he has had to destroy the factory in his bone marrow that makes the blood cells that keeps your body healthy."

Mrs Maxwell added that Kieran is being nursed in isolation, after his temperature increased to worrying levels.

She wrote: "He is also on a morphine drip to get a handle on his pain, again this is due to the chemo he has had.

"He is not awake for long during the day, as his pain is that high.

"Kieran is a fighter and I am so proud of him and everything he has come through to get to this point."

Mrs Maxwell asked people to leave messages of love and support for Kieran and the group's followers responded emphatically.

Almost 100 messages had been left within seven hours of the update being posted this morning (Sunday, November 10).
