PRODUCERS are plotting to make a £20m film about Guy Fawkes – with his home city of York as one of the main locations.

The movie about Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot, is being proposed by an independent production company, Elsa, that develops, finances and produces feature films.

Spokesman Scott Rhodes said it would be targeted at the 18-to-25-year-old market, and have elements of Pirates Of The Caribbean and also darker thrillers such as Se7en.

He said a big name such as Orlando Bloom would be targeted for the lead role, and the intention would be to film in the streets of York and also at studios situated at the University of York. He said there would be huge benefits to the city’s tourist economy.

“Imagine the impact if the opening credits had Guy walking past the Minster,” he said.

Mr Rhodes said a wealthy Dubai investor had already pledged £8m towards the venture and investment was being sought from private individuals to raise £150,000 in return for a 20 per cent shareholding in the company. The investment was suitable for “high net worth individuals or self- certified investors”, with a minimum investment of £10,000.

“With an expected budget of £20m, Guy Fawkes – which is the working title – is initially attracting investment through the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme and is a very attractive opportunity for early investors,” he said.

Mr Rhodes said the film had been under discussion for about a year and he anticipated production would take place in 2015 and release in 2016.
