Open air gym to help residents get fit for free

AN OPEN air gym has opened alongside a playground, so older residents can get fit for free.
The £9,000 facility has opened in the small Hambleton village of Husthwaite near Easingwold.
The innovative scheme has given residents a free fitness facility, which as well as being open all year, is also open to the elements.
It is part of a much wider project to promote physical fitness in the community, which includes a new play area and a multi use games area opened four years ago.
It was made possible with a £4,800 grant from the LEADER fund through the Rural development Programme for England, which is jointly financed by Defra and the European Union.
“This scheme is the final element of a five year project to improve facilities in the village,” said Hambleton District Council’s portfolio holder, Councillor Nigel Knapton.
“It is a very exciting and innovative idea and gives local people the opportunity to work out without the expense of having to join a gym.
“Interestingly the equipment was requested by older residents – and it includes a rowing machine air skier and pedal bike. I certainly enjoyed trying them all out.”
