Woman airlifted to hospital and around 100 snakes die in fire
6:07pm Tuesday 29th October 2013 in News
A WOMAN has been airlifted to hospital and "up to 100" snakes have died in a house fire in York.
Fire broke out at about 2.20pm today (Tuesday) in a house in Boothwood Road, York, with four fire crews and police being called to the scene.
It is thought the blaze began in a reptile room in the house which contained around 100 snakes, and all or most of them have perished.
The woman is believed to have been trapped in a first-floor bedroom from where she phoned 999 before being rescued and taken to hospital by Yorkshire Air Ambulance, but her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Fire station manager Alan Bell said the cause of the fire is currently being investigated but it is currently not believed to be suspicious.
He said the woman was given fire survival guidance by 999 operators while fire crews made their way to her that may have saved her life – and that without it the outcome could have been very different.
