Yorkshire named as third best destination in the world
TONGA? Texas? Majorca? No. If you want to visit one of the best destinations in the world look no further than Yorkshire.
The county’s position as one of leading visitor destinations in the world has been cemented after an acclaimed travel guide listed it as one of the top ten in the world.
Only Sikkim in India and the Kimberley in Australia were ahead of Yorkshire in the Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel guide for 2014.
“Endorsements rarely come much better than this, from a guide that has a worldwide reputation across tourism and informing visitors,” said Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive Gary Verity.
“This is massive for Yorkshire and our thousands of amazing tourism businesses, destinations and events.
“Seeing Yorkshire rank so highly in this guide is testament to the collective hard work that has been put in, not least in securing the Grand Départ of the Tour de France for Yorkshire next summer.”
Lonely Planet contributor Tom Hall said: “It’s about time that travellers wake up to the wonder that is Yorkshire."
“Listing the county as one of the best regions in the world for visitors in the coming year is in recognition of it being a fantastic all-rounder; with some of the most stunning scenery in the country, dynamic cities, friendly people and a burgeoning food scene.”
The book adds: “In 2014, this welcoming region of rugged moorlands, heritage homes and cosy pubs will be able to hold its head even higher when the Tour de France begins its Grand Départ.”
The full top ten destinations were:
1 Sikkim, India
2 The Kimberley, Australia
4 Hokuriku, Japan
6 Victoria Falls
8 West Coast, New Zealand
9 Hunan, China
10 Ha’apai, Tonga
