A NEW footpath and cycle route linking a university and Darlington’s main station has been officially opened.
Darlington MP Jenny Chapman was on hand to open the new route, which provides a faster link between Teesside University, Darlington College and Bank Top Station.
The new route is reached from Yarm Road via Peel Street, opposite St John’s Church.
The new route was funded by the Department for Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund through the Local Motion project.
Professor Graham Henderson, vice-chancellor of Teesside University, said: "This new route for pedestrians and cyclists is another step along the way in the redevelopment of Central Park.
“It opens up direct access to and from Darlington station which will be vital as we welcome visitors to Teesside University and the other exciting new initiatives."
Councillor David Lyonette, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for transport, said: “We are continuing to improve the infrastructure for sustainable transport such as walking and cycling in Darlington.
“The new route is a great addition to the routes we already have around town. This new link between the station and the campuses should make it even easier for students and staff to leave the car at home and travel to the campuses sustainably.”
