International sprinter comes home to Stockton to talk to youngsters
AN INTERNATIONAL sprinter came home to hand out awards to new generation of North-East athletes.
Richard Kilty was guest of honour at a ceremony held at Billingham Forum where 15 youngsters were inducted into the Tees Active Sports Academy.
Mr Kilty, 24, was a former member of the academy and earlier this year represented Great Britain in the 4x100m relay team.
Other former members have competed in the Olympic and Commonwealth Games and gained international honours in the sports of swimming, athletics, kayaking, rowing, rugby and ice hockey.
Mr Kilty, of Stockton, talked the young people and reiterated the importance of parental backing saying his own father, Kevin, he has been a constant source of support.
Tees Active Sports Academy Manager Allan McDermott said “The Academy now has 39 members and the amount of sporting talent amongst them is incredible.
"The future is very exciting for these athletes and I am positive they will be a credit to the region. It was fantastic session with Richard and with him being part of the original Academy class of 2006 made it even more poignant.”
