Drunken man who tried to fight in a Darlington street was floored by one punch
A DRUNKEN reveller who tried to fight in a Darlington street was knocked out with one punch, magistrates heard today (Thursday, October 24).
Prosecutor Jonathan Bambro told Darlington Magistrates’ Court that when police arrived at Beaumont Street in the early hours of October 6, they found that the injured man, John Welch, was carrying a bag of cocaine worth £40.
Mr Bambro said that CCTV had operators called the police after seeing 27-year-old Welch squaring up to a man who was trying to walk away.
Welch threw a punch and the man responded by knocking him out with one blow.
He later needed treatment from paramedics at the scene.
Welch, of Geneva Road, Darlington, pleaded guilty in court to using threatening behaviour and possessing a Class A Drug.
In mitigation the court heard that the other man had wanted to fight and that Welch, who was drunk at the time, was the victim.
Welch also said the cocaine was for his own use.
Magistrates ordered him to pay a total of £456 in court fines and charges for the two offences.
