Fiji Rugby League squad has arrived in Richmondshire
5:36pm Thursday 17th October 2013 in News
THE FIJI Bati national rugby team has descended upon Richmondshire ahead of its tour of England and Wales for the Rugby League World Cup next week.
The team is being looked after by the Fijian community in Catterick Garrison, which is funding all food, accommodation and travel until the competition starts on Saturday, October 26.
The George and Dragon pub in Hudswell, near Richmond, is feeding the 35 players breakfast, lunch and dinner every day until Friday, October 18.
The team will travel to Rochdale on Monday, October 28 for its first match against Ireland.
Jackie Stubbs, landlady of the George and Dragon, said she was inspired to play host to the team because her chef Ellie Tuvotu told her the players get no funding from the Fijian Government until they start the tournament.
“We have been feeding them since they arrived earlier this week and have planned a Fijian Festival in the pub on Friday, October 18,” she said.
Ms Stubbs has organised a Fijian buffet and traditional Fijian singing and dancing, as well as a performance by the Fiji Bati rugby team.
There will be opportunities for photographs with the players.
Tickets cost £15 and must be booked in advance - call 01748-518373.
