Conker competition is highlight of Harvest Time at upper Teesdale visitor centre
AN autumn extravaganza takes place at a rural visitor centre this weekend.
The highlight of Harvest Time, at Bowlees, in upper Teesdale, on Saturday, October 19, will be a conker competition.
Sarah Kelly, development officer at the visitor centre, which is run by the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) partnership, said: “In recent years the game of conkers seems to have fallen by the wayside but we have so many strewn around the area that we really should be making the most of them.
“People who we’ve mentioned the competition to are recalling their days as school conker champions.
“We’d love to get people of all ages taking part but we really want to reintroduce the game to younger players.”
Other activities include a jam and marmalade competition, which will be judged by Jon Dunn, who runs Cafe1618@Bowlees from the centre.
Bakers are also being asked to enter their best hand made wholemeal loaf in a bread making contest.
Mr Dunn will give a butter churning demonstration, a pickling masterclass will be led by Simon Wilson and children's craft activities will be held during the day.
Jam and bread makers can bring their produce along to Bowlees Visitor Centre from 9am until 11am and the conker competition begins at 12.30pm.
