Polar bears trek through North-East in charity challenge
A GROUP of polar bears is trekking through the North-East in a bid to raise thousands for charity.
Four polar bears have been spotted enjoying the delights of pubs, grooming salons and local landmarks as they meander their way from Middlesbrough to Newcastle.
The bears – in reality four workers from energy company Utilitas – embarked upon their 50-mile trek to raise money for Home Start UK, a charity which helps to battle family crisis across the country.
More than £1,200 has already been raised by the men behind the polar bear suits – Jamie Thomson, Callum Lyons, Daniel Hatton and Shaun Dollamore – and it is hoped that they will reach their £2,000 target by Friday.
The company’s marketing assistant Sally Rimmer has been manning a support van and collecting donations along the way.
She said: “They walked from Middlesbrough to Darlington yesterday and are walking from Darlington to Durham today (Thursday October 17).
“They will leave Durham tomorrow and end up in Newcastle. It’s been going really well and the reactions have been great.
“They look a bit sweaty in their suits now but everyone has been beeping their horns at them and donating money. Children are loving it.”
Pictures of the polar bears and tales of their adventures are being shared on the firm’s Facebook page, facebook.com/pages/Utilita-Energy.
