6:22pm Tuesday 15th October 2013 in News
CRICKET legend Dickie Bird will be in action again this weekend – officially starting the first-ever Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon in York.
The former international umpire will start the race – which starts and finishes at the city’s university - at 9.30am on Sunday.
“I am absolutely delighted to be able to help,” said the 80-year-old, who also played first class cricket for Yorkshire and Leicestershire.
“I’m sure it will be a big success and I wish all those taking on the challenge the very best of luck. It’s tremendous that so many good causes will benefit from the runners’ efforts.”
A total of 6,100 runners will be taking part in the event with entries from as far afield as France, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, the USA and the Caribbean. The runners are expected to raise about £1.3m for charity.
