A PENSIONER has told how her husband saved her life after she fell 15 feet into a canal and lay unconscious face down in the water.
Jean Barton 68, from Dunnington, near York was with husband Ian, 72, when she slipped and fell while operating a lock gate on holiday on their narrow boat on a canal, near Birmingham. He threw a lifebelt in but Mrs Barton was unconscious.
Mr Barton swam to her and with the help of a passer by managed to pull her onto the deck of the boat where they thumped her back to get excess water out until paramedics arrived and she was taken to hospital.
While Mr Barton was waiting for his wife he suffered chest pains and was treated for a mild heart attack.
Mrs Barton said:”I don’t think I would be here now if it hadn’t been for Ian and another chap who helped him rescue me. I remember falling and a splash and the next thing I knew I was waking up in hospital.”
The couple have now brought their boat back to York where it’s being moored over the winter and Mrs Barton says she is planning to make sure she wears a lifejacket when operating locks next year.
