Free car-parking for Christmas shoppers in Hambleton

TRADERS are to be given some extra help across the Hambleton district in the run-up to Christmas – with the suspension of car-parking charges.
The council’s cabinet today, October 8, agreed that their car-parks will be free to use on every Thursday in December and every day between Christmas Eve and January 2.
The free Thursdays were chosen following talks with business leaders in the market towns as well as with the Federation of Small Businesses.
“We hope ‘Free Thursdays’ will bring more shoppers into our market towns in the run up to the festive season,” said the authority’s portfiolio holder for asset management, Coun Nigel Knapton.
“In previous years we have offered free parking between Christmas and New Year but this year we are extending that offer into December.
“This will be a huge boost to the towns at their busiest time of the year – and is one less thing that shoppers need to worry about at a very expensive time.”
A spokesman for Northallerton Retail and Business Forum welcomed the news.
"We have pressed hard for this concession as part of our plans for late-night opening in Northallerton on the three Thursdays before Christmas,” he said.
"Compared to other towns, parking charges remain low here, but this will provide a welcome incentive to shoppers and visitors in the run-up to the festive period."
