Grandmother's delight at resignation of councillor who called her a "stupid old cow"

A GRANDMOTHER reacted with delight after a councillor who called her “a stupid old cow” resigned.
The comments came after 72-year-old Margaret Lister phoned Geoff Evans, her local councillor with Eastfield Parish Council and Scarborough Borough Council, near Scarborough, to inquire why an item on her council tax bill had increased by 100 per cent since the previous year.
After saying to him: “You don’t know and you’re a councillor?” he is alleged to have snapped back “You’re a stupid old cow” and hung up on her.
The incident was investigated by Scarborough Borough Council’s standards committee, which found him in contempt of council procedures.
It also ordered him to make a written apology, saying if he didn’t they would issue a press release on the matter to the media. He has still refused to do so and has now resigned from his seat on the local authority.
On hearing the news, Mrs Lister, from Eastfield, near Scarborough, said: “Hooray. That’s brilliant. It’s made my day.
“I never expected him to do it and it is the best news I’ve had since it all happened.
“I did not ask for it to go this far. But what has to be has to be.
“All he had to do was give me an apology – I hope it’s in the post.
“I was advised to take it further by the council solicitor. The solicitor did not like the way Councillor Evans spoke to him either.”
The Liberal Democrat, who won the Eastfield seat in May 2007, admitted using the offending words but claimed Mrs Evans had insulted him first, which she denies.
He also claimed his human rights had been infringed because he was not allowed to put his side of the story to the Standards Committee. He was told this was because he had failed to co-operate with the initial stages of the investigation.
He sent his resignation to the Town Hall on Thursday after the row became public.
He said “I have nothing to say. I do not like the way I have been represented and will be seeking legal opinion."
Standards Committee Chairman Norman Murphy said: "He has done the right think and about time.
"It was an appalling way to treat any member of the public, let alone a grandmother of 72.
"He has also treated the Standards Committee members with equal contempt."
The council has announced the resignation of Geoffrey Evans and said a casual vacancy for a borough councillor on the Eastfield ward now exists.
Arrangements will be made for an election to be held when the council receives written requests from two electors in the Eastfield ward.
