Reformed young offender opens up new barbers in Darlington
A FORMER prolific young offender with a talent for cutting hair has restyled his life and opened his own barbers.
At the tender age of 14, Sky Taylor was already well-known to the police in his hometown of Leicester.
His bad behaviour got him kicked out of school a number of times and a relationship breakdown in 2011 saw him become homeless and he slept on friends' sofas for about six months.
By 16 he was wanted by police for common assault, conspiracy to burgle and several theft offences.
After spending more than 50 hours in police cells, the teenager was hauled before a judge at Leicester Crown Court who warned him a prison sentence was imminent if he didn’t change his ways.
“It really did hit me when I was in court,” he said. “I was handcuffed to a G4S officer and tears were streaming down my face. I had completely gone numb and didn’t know what I was doing.”
In a bid to give him one last chance, he was given a referral order and moved to his grandma’s house in Darlington where, despite leaving school with no qualifications, he managed to secure an apprenticeship as a track maintenance worker on the railways.
However, with a lifelong passion for art and cutting hair, he landed a job at Yaeger Barbers, in Skinnergate, Darlington, where he honed his skills before getting the chance to work for himself.
Now aged 18, he runs his own business - Sky’s Barbers – in Tubwell Row, Darlington, and has kept out of trouble for the past two years.
“I didn’t want to let it go. It was one chance and it wasn’t going to come along again,” he said. “It was a risk and I have sometimes thought is it worth it, but I keep getting better and people keep coming in.
“I never thought that this is what I was going to do. I know a lot of people that were in a similar place to what I was in where you feel you have hit rock bottom.
“But when you hit rock bottom there is only one way you can go – back up. There is nothing stopping you, I don’t believe anything is impossible.
“I would never look back on what you have done in your past, just use those experiences to better yourself.”
