Fox Hall Inn at East Layton receives national award

A FISH and chip restaurant can claim to be among the country’s elite after being handed a national award.
The Fox Hall Inn, on the A66 in East Layton, near Richmond, North Yorkshire, was handed the The National Federation of Fish Friers’ Fish and Chip Quality Award by Jill Harbord, the headmistress in ITV finishing school show Ladette to Lady.
The restaurant was awarded the accolade after demonstrating its attention to detail in areas ranging from food quality and hygiene to customer service.
Steve and Jennifer Barker, who sold two fish and chip shops in Richmond ten years ago before running a caravan park in Brompton-on-Swale and a property development business, reopened Fox Hall Inn in March.
Mrs Barker, of nearby Hutton Magna, said she was thrilled a busy opening summer had been capped off with an accolade only two per cent of fish and chip shops achieve.
She said keeping batter very cold before frying, home-made chips and daily deliveries of fresh fish were key to producing good quality meals.
Mrs Barker, who plans to open a bed and breakfast business at the restaurant next year, said: “It is nice that all the hard work has been recognised.”
