Meeting to attract new local hosts for Chernobyl children
4:48pm Monday 30th September 2013 in News
AN OPEN evening aims to attract new hosts and donors for Chernobyl's children.
Friends of Chernobyl’s Children, based in Northallerton, are looking for new families to host a group of children coming to the town next year.
This follows the completion of a successful three year programme this summer which was the last visit for many of the children.
About 12 children visit for four weeks in June and July each year, returning for up to three years to the same family to get the maximum health benefits.
Families are supported by the charity with a weekly programme of activities, interpreting services and the provision of clothes and other supplies needed by the children during their visit.
The group is also seeking enthusiastic fundraisers to help to support the fundraising activity needed to pay for the children’s flights, visas and other costs which are now running at around £800 per child per visit.
Local businesses and individuals already provide support to the visits, which helps to keep costs to a minimum, and cash or other donations are always gratefully received.
Anyone interested can contact co-ordinator Linda Spence on 01609-773708 for more information. There will be an open meeting for potential hosts, fundraisers and supporters at 7pm on Thursday, October 3 in Northallerton Town Hall. Refreshments will be available and all are welcome.
