UFO's - Unidentified Floating Obects - spotted on Saltburn beach
A CLEAN-up on a North-East beach recovered the largest number of UFO’s – unidentified floating objects - following a nationwide campaign.
Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) took part in the Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project to tidy up beaches from as far afield as Devon, Sussex and east Cleveland.
And Saltburn came top of the pile for unusual objects picked up from the beach including multicoloured nylon pellets, known as mermaids tears, and blue rubber balls.
Dom Ferris, SAS campaign officer, said: “These Unidentified Floating Objects, or UFOs as we know them, are invading our beaches all over the UK. With your knowledge and expertise Surfers Against Sewage can trace the UFOs origins and bring a stop to these alien invaders by tackling the polluting companies.”
Around the country, the campaigners have picked up a large quantities of foreign debris have also been collected – such as shampoo bottles from China and Japan – showing the distance that water-borne pollutants and rubbish can travel.
Other disturbing discoveries include a yoghurt pot dating from the 1980s and an old crisp packet from the 1960s, as well as hundreds of thousands of cigarette butts, demonstrating just how long rubbish can last at sea.
