Sponsored walk is first step for scout group without a home
A NOMADIC scout group left without a home after their hut was condemned are fundraising to build a new one.
The 1st Middleton St George Scouts moved into the youth club room at the village’s community centre when their hut on Neasham Road was earmarked for demolition last year.
But the room flooded, so the group found another base at the scout headquarters on Widdowfield Road in Darlington, but some members were unable to travel there and numbers dwindled.
Next week the scouts will move to Sadberge village hall in an attempt to rebuild their numbers by being closer to their village, but leaders recognised that a permanent solution is needed.
They are now hoping to raise enough money to build their own hut, and the fundraising starts on October 18 with scout leaders tackling the 42-mile Lyke Wake Walk from Osmotherly to Ravenscar in 24-hours.
They will be joined by scouts on the first and last sections of the walk.
Assistant leader Lorraine Copeland said: “We have been investigating the reality of building our own hut and it is very, very expensive.
“We will need something like £25,000 so the walk is the first of many fundraising events we’re going to have to do.”
