Thousands of school pupils to swap how they get to school
THOUSANDS of school pupils in the North-East are expected to get on their bikes this autumn as part of an initiative designed to promote sustainable transport.
The MEGA Motion scheme will see children across the region change the way they get to school.
Every Friday, pupils at schools in the area will be encouraged to get there on foot or by bike, scooter or public transport.
Points will be given out each week as pupils compete to be named a ‘MEGA Hero’ at the end of the year.
Between Friday October 4 and Friday June 13, there will be 30 MEGA Fridays, each with a different travelling through time theme.
Councillor David Lyonette, Darlington Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport said: “The response from parents and teachers from schools which took part in MEGA Motion last year was very positive.
“There was a noticeable reduction in the numbers of cars at the school gates on MEGA Fridays and that was a welcome sight and made the school entrance a much safer environment for pupils.”
