Stars from the region Mark Benton, Abi Alton and Dave Myers shine on Strictly Come Dancing and X Factor
PERFORMERS who grew up in the same North-East market town held millions captive this weekend with star turns on tv’s Strictly Come Dancing and the X Factor.
Actor Mark Benton and singer-songwriter Abi Alton, who both come from Guisborough, east Cleveland, impressed judges on the primetime shows with their unique talents.
Mr Benton, who played Mr Chalky in the BBC1’s Waterloo Road drama, made his ‘Strictly’ debut by dancing a comedic tango with his professional partner, Iveta Lukosiute, to earn him 24 points out of a possible 40.
Head judge, Len Goodman, told him in front of a BBC1 tv audience of 10m: “I am shocked at how good that was.”
Mr Benton, 48, took to Twitter after the show, and wrote: “I have to say I feel so humbled by everyone’s comments. Thank you so very much, it really means a lot.”
And supermarket shop assistant, Abi Alton, is one step further to achieving her dream of becoming a professional singer by making it through the X Factor ‘bootcamp’ to perform at a judges’ house after her rendition of Whitney Houston's 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody'.
Judge Nicole Scherzinger, who will be helped by soul diva Mary J Blige, had already filled her allotted six places but when Abi’s pared down version of the 80s classic led to a standing ovation Nicole decided to include the 18-year-old at the the expense of one of her earlier choices.
one half of TV's favourite culinary duo, Dave Myers, who went straight to the bottom of the leaderboard for his first Strictly Come Dancing routine. The ‘Hairy Biker’ from Barrow in Cumbria swapped chopping for cha-cha with his entertaining version of Maroon 5’s ‘Moves like Jagger’ on Strictly Come Dancing which judge, Bruno Tonioli described as: “The most insanely hilarious mess ever.”
