STAFF at a local history centre would like to thank all those who contributed their memories of the Gladstone Street Baths.
The Centre for Local Studies, based in Darlington’s Crown Street Library, set up an exhibition about the historic venue using images and information from the council’s archive alongside stories from local people.
Staff said that a number of visitors had recalled learning to swim with a rope tied around their middle or having swimming lessons with class mates.
Bathing fashions also feature in the collected memories, with old style caps and hand knitted swimming costumes mentioned. Visiting the baths for a hot bath was a regular occurrence for some in the days before indoor bathrooms became commonplace.
Many people in the town also spoke of their memories of attending dances and concerts on the converted dance floor in the 1960s, with Jonny Dankworth and Kenny Balls among the well known names that entertained the crowds.
The display will continue until Monday (September 30) and memories can still be added.
