Darlington groups battle it out for funding boost
FOUR good causes in Darlington are battling it out for public votes that could see them get a funding boost for a range of projects.
Darlington RA Juniors, First Stop, Breathe Easy and Family Help are the four organisations shortlisted for the 2013 Lloyds Community Fund.
Voting opened this week and runs until November 1. More than 52,000 votes have already been cast nationally, with competitions running across the UK.
Each of the organisations is encouraging its supporters, customers, colleagues and the wider public to give their votes.
• Family Help – The women’s refuge offers safe accommodation to women, and women with children, affected by Domestic Abuse. A Family Help spokeswoman said the Community Fund grant would allow the charity to encourage and strengthen family bonding through exercise, family outings and healthy eating.
• First Stop – The charity supports people who suffer homelessness and live complex and chaotic lives. The grant would be put towards a project introducing service users to ‘cottage industry’ opportunities, learn new skills and understand how to produce items to sell to the public, with aim of increasing self-worth confidence and potential employability.
• Breathe Easy – The volunteer support group assists sufferers of lung conditions and their carers. Patients with such chronic conditions are often on oxygen, confined to home and as a result feel frightened or isolated. The group is four years old and seeking funding to widen its membership and be able to support more people.
• Darlington RA Juniors – The club has six junior teams consisting of both boys and girls, with the priority of providing affordable football for children aged seven to 18. It is proud of its voluntary work, such as a recent soccer school, which non-members are welcome to join for a weekly fee of £1.50.
People can vote in person, at Lloyds’ branch in Skinnergate, as well as online at lloydsbank.com/communityfund and by text.
