Army Strongman competition held in Darlington
7:07pm Wednesday 25th September 2013 in News
SOLDIERS flexed their muscles in a Strongman competition at a North-East gym.
The event, at Muscle City, in Darlington, was organised by Sergeant Daniel Duggan, who is based at Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire.
A series of disciplines were tested, including tyre flips, squats and the farmer’s walk, which involves walking while carrying heavy weights.
Sgt Duggan said a total of 15 competitors took part in three weight categories – under 75kg, 75kg to 90kg and 90kg and over.
The 90kg and over category was won by gym owner Kieran Meredith, while other categories were won by Armed Forces personnel.
Corporal Bremner won in the lightest weight category, while Corporal Brier won the 75kg to 90kg category.
Sgt Duggan said: “It was a successful day. Strongman is not a recognised sport within the British Army and we are trying to get it recognised.
“We had competitors from various units, it was a good laugh, the guys enjoyed themselves.”
Sgt Duggan said efforts are being made to arrange another event in November.
