Skerne Park Primary School's young headteacher celebrates successful first year
ONE of the youngest headteachers in the country is celebrating a successful first year at the helm of a Darlington school.
Kate Chisholm, 34, who is among the youngest ten per cent of head teachers nationally, took over as head teacher of Skerne Park Primary School last year and oversaw its transition to academy status in February under the guardianship of Hummersknott Academy.
Since taking over the 400-pupil school, Ms Chisholm’s emphasis has been on bringing back the basics to the teaching environment.
She has also reformed the school curriculum by focusing on a 'stage not age' philosophy where children are streamed across the school for reading and writing, ensuring every child is taught what they need at the right time.
Ms Chisholm said: “I am delighted to be celebrating a year as head teacher of Skerne Park Academy.
“We have had a successful year, which is a testament to the staff and pupils here.
“Reaching academy status last February was a new chapter for the school, and one that has shaped the futures of our pupils for the best going forward.
“We have worked closely with Hummersknott Academy Trust, which has been beneficial for the school, and we look forward to continuing to share in the success of the academy in the future.”
Pat Howarth, Principal of Hummersknott Academy, congratulated Ms Chisholm, adding: “We look forward to our continuous work with Skerne Park Academy and would like to wish Kate all the best going forward as head.”
