Darlington sailor helps out during International Shipping Week in London

A NORTH-EAST sailor has returned to his regular duties after helping out at a maritime event in London.
Philip Smithhurst, 20, also known as Smithy, joined the Royal Navy three years ago after attending Longfield Comprehensive School in Darlington.
He is now a seaman specialist aboard the HMS Northumberland, a Type-23 frigate.
The Plymouth-based warship was called at short notice to London International Shipping Week following the last-minute re-tasking of another ship.
As a seaman specialist, Able Seaman Smithhurst’s role entails working on the upper deck of warships dealing with the manoeuvring of the ship, tying it up when alongside and working with the sea-boats.
When the opportunity of attending his first London International Shipping Week event arose, it made sense that he was excited about the prospect of such a unique opportunity.
He said: “It is a bit different being here compared to the training serials we were doing.
“It has been good to be able to go and see the sights of London and we have had a lot of visitors on board to show around. It’s a great place to go at short notice.”
