Police hunt arsonists who targeted an east Cleveland village
POLICE are hunting arsonists who targeted a house and car in an east Cleveland village last night (Saturday).
The first incident happened at around 8.55pm when police were called to reports of a black Renault Clio on fire that was parked on Hollybush in the town.
The car has since been recovered and police are working with Cleveland Fire Brigade to assess the damage and cause of the blaze.
The second occured around 10.50pm police were alerted to a fire at the front entrance of a property on Kirkstall Court in Skelton.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “The house was unoccupied at the time and officers say that if it was not for a neighbour who tried to put out the flames at the front door and quickly call the Fire Brigade that the damage to the house would have been much worse.
“Detectives are keeping an open mind as to the motive for the incidents and are investigating whether there may be a link.
“They want to speak to a man who was seen walking through Kirkstall Court around the time of the house fire.”
The man is described as white, clean shaven, in his 20s, around 5ft 3ins tall and wearing a dark coloured hooded top with royal blue stripes down the sleeves.
Anyone with any information on either incident or knows who the man may be is asked to call detectives on the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
