Teenager in Barnard Castle wins top national engineering scholarship

A TALENTED young engineer has won a sought-after Arkwright Engineering Scholarship identifying him as a future engineering leader.
Sam Theakston, 17, of Barnard Castle School passed a rigorous selection process including a two-hour aptitude test and an interview hosted by a top engineering university.
The test saw students asked to solve engineering design problems and they had take part in a team to solve an engineering problem.
The teenager from Kirby Fleetham, in North Yorkshire, won £600 for gaining the scholarship and the school received £400.
He is the fourth Barnard Castle pupil in six years to gain the scholarship.
Dr Martin Thomas, national director of the Arkwright Scholarships Trust said: “I am delighted to see students from Barnard Castle School secure this prestigious accolade.
“Clearly, there is considerable technical talent.”
