Beggar conned people into believing he had been attacked and robbed
POLICE have arrested a 33-year-old man suspected of duping people into handing over money by claiming he had been assaulted.
Police received several reports about a man with a cut and bruised face approaching people in the Darlington area with claims that he had been attacked and robbed of his money and phone.
Due to his bloodied appearance people believed him and handed over their money.
One victim who took pity on the man even gave him enough money for a taxi to Gateshead – which is where the fraudster claimed he had to get to – but then saw the beggar in the same Darlington street asking others for more money.
The suspect was caught by police and is due to appear before Peterlee Magistrates’ Court on Saturday (September 20).
