Owner of tyre depot angry that site features in town blueprint
A BUSINESSMAN has hit out at a council that identified one of his company’s sites as being ripe for development.
Jim Greenwood, who runs Spennymoor Tyre Centre, in Spennymoor, County Durham, was outraged that one of his bases was included in a regeneration master plan for the town.
The Durham County Council plan, which was approved by cabinet on Wednesday, September 18, aims to coordinate regeneration and investment for housing, retail, leisure and employment in Spennymoor over the next three to five years.
It described the tyre depot site, on Barnfield Road, as underused and said it ‘may offer a potential opportunity close to the town centre’.
But Mr Greenwood said that the garages, which he has owned since 1985, are well used and he has no intention of making way should a developer want to buy the land.
He said: “Four nights a week we work there and it supplies our other depot on Holborn Street, which I built in 1972.
“The council has no idea about my business, it will never be for sale.”
Sarah Robson, head of economic development, said: “We apologise for any offence the inclusion of this depot as an underused site has caused.
“The tyre depot sits as part of a larger site which offers potential as a site for redevelopment and the master plan should have focussed on the wider area rather than just the depot.
“We will ensure the online version of the report is amended.”
