A BRITISH woman was killed in a horror smash in a Spanish holiday resort.
Andrea Leighton died after she crashed her car as she drove to her Costa Blanca holiday home.
The 52-year-old is understood to have been driving on one of the main routes from Alicante Airport as she returned from dropping someone off for a flight.
Her distraught family, including husband Derek, who was at home in Woodlands Grove, in West Park, Hartlepool, were given the devastating news on Saturday night by officers from Cleveland Police.
The exact circumstances surrounding her incident are not yet known.
Cleveland Police received a call from Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) officials informing them of the tragedy and asked them to pass on the message to Mrs Leighton’s family.
A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said: “We received a call from the FCO on Saturday night informing us that Spanish police had told them of the death of a 52-year-old woman in a collision that evening.
“At the request of FCO officers we attended the address of the lady’s next of kin to inform them of her death.”
An FCO spokeswoman said: “We can confirm the death of a British national in Spain.
“We are providing consular assistance at this sad time.”
