A LONG-SERVING charity stalwart has been honoured for her efforts.
Pat McCarthy, chairwoman of the Darlington branch of Parkinson’s UK, was presented with an honorary life membership award by the town’s mayor, Charles Johnson, in a surprise ceremony on Wednesday (September 11) afternoon.
Jane Batty, secretary of the branch, said: “Pat is a valuable member of the branch and has been our chairperson for several years, keeping the group together despite having health problems of her own.
“Her late husband, John, suffered from Parkinson’s and that was how she became a member of the branch.
“She is very approachable and can always be found at the other end of the telephone line, offering help and advice.
“Pat is always a willing helper at fundraising events and for fundraising awareness week.
“She will always step in at short notice to help out whenever or wherever needed.
“This is only the third occasion that an honorary life membership award has been given to a branch member.”
