Plans approved for £450,000 Sedgefield running track
A RUNNING group has cause to celebrate after securing outline planning permission for a world-class athletics facility on their doorstep.
The decision, by planners at Durham County Council, means Sedgefield Harriers are a step closer to achieving their dream of creating a high quality synthetic running quality at Sedgefield Community College.
It comes as the award-winning club prepares to celebrate its eighth anniversary tomorrow (Saturday, September 7).
Club chairman Ean Parsons [CORR] said the planning consent was a fantastic birthday present for the club, which was set up in 2005 and has more than 200 members.
“The granting of planning permission is wonderful news,” he said. “It clears the way for us to raise the money needed for the track and work with our partners at Sedgefield Community College to make the track a reality as soon as possible.
“We know the fund raising task ahead and we aren't daunted by it, we have some fantastic members who are already working hard to raise the funds.”
The Back the Track campaign has already attracted generous donations from Sedgefield residents and Sedgefield Round Table and, in April, the club was awarded £40,000 from a community funding pot set up by Sainsbury's supermarket.
And, tomorrow night (Saturday, September 7), a fundraising ball will be held at Sedgefield Racecourse.
Mr Parsons said: “This is truly a community project and the track will benefit the community in Sedgefield as a whole with a fantastic sports facility.
“At Sedgefield Harriers we have a first class team of coaches developing athletes to be future champions and the track is a vital piece of the jig-saw.”
