A GROUP of soldiers are planning to carry a 13 stone log in relay during the Great North Run after being inspired by the plight of Fraja Simpson.
The eight soldiers and a regabilitation clerk from Waterllo Platoon at the Infantry Training Centre at Catterick Garrison hope to raise more than £2,500 for children's cancer charity KidsCan.
It helps children like five-year-old Fraja, from RAF Leeming, who has been fighting an agressive and rare form of cancer, Neuroblastoma. Her condition has stabalised but she still requires regular tests.
Runner, Amanda Harrison, who is gym rehabilitation clerk, said: “Training for the BUPA Great North Run commenced in June, and as much as we’ve enjoyed the hot weather this summer, it’s been hard work.
“We’re incredibly excited about taking part in such a great event and will hopefully raise a significant amount for a charity which is doing amazing work to find new and improved treatments for children with cancer, like Fraja.”
KidsCan fundraising manager, Holly Bond, said: “The research our scientists carry out intends to find new ways of treating children’s cancer and improving existing treatments, in order to better help children such as Fraja."
Fraja recently underwent scans at Leeds General Infirmary which confirmed that her neuroblastoma with MYCN was stable.
She will still have to undergo rigorous testing over the next five years to make sure the cancerous cells in her body do not grown - this would be classed as a relapse, and her chances of recovery would be much lower.
Her next round of tests are in November.
