3:26pm Tuesday 3rd September 2013 in News
HARVEST CEREMONY: Richmond Town Council will host the town’s First Fruits of the Harvest Ceremony on Saturday, September 14 at 10.30am outside the Trinity Church in the Market Place.
The ceremony dates back to the medieval period, and consists of a prayer by local clergy, before a local farmer presents a bag of corn to the mayor, who in turn passes it to a miller for inspection.
If the corn is accepted the mayor presents the farmer with a bottle of wine. Bystanders then toast a good harvest.
A presentation for this year’s garden and allotment competitions will also take place.
DALES CONCERT: Jez Lowe and Kate Bramley return to Reeth Memorial Hall on Friday, September 27, with songs and music from the north east of England. Mr Lowe is the main songwriter for the BBC’s Radio Ballads and is also a former BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year nominee. Kate is a talented fiddle player and also director of Bad Apple Theatre. Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. Tickets are on sale at Reeth Post Office or contact John Little 01748-884759, email: firstname.lastname@example.org; £10 in advance, £12 on the door, under 16s half price and profits are in aid of the Memorial Hall.
