Yorkshire named Europe's top destination

YORKSHIRE has overcome competition from Berlin, London and Madrid to land the title of Europe's Leading Destination.
The region was awarded the accolade at the annual World Travel Awards and became the first location other than a major city or country to have won the title in its 17-year history.
Previous winners of the award include Istanbul, Paris, London and Barcelona.
The awards aim to highlight locations and travel brands for their contribution to the tourism industry, which in Yorkshire is worth about £7bn annually, with 216 million visits made.
The award comes less than a year after Yorkshire won the right to host the first two stages of the Tour de France next July.
Gary Verity, chief executive of tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire, said the award was a "real validation" of the efforts put in by the county's tourism industry.
