Staff fired by Student Loans Company after posting inappropriate material on Facebook
5:20pm Monday 2nd September 2013 in News
FOUR members of staff at the Student Loans Company (SLC) have been sacked for posting inappropriate material on Facebook.
A Freedom of Information request showed that the employees were fired after posting derogatory remarks about student customers, a manager and the company, as well as comments which threatened the health and safety of fellow employees.
SLC employs hundreds of people at its offices in Lingfield Point, in Darlington, where staff process applications from new students and part time students and arrange the disabled student allowance.
As well as its Darlington offices, SLC also has offices in Glasgow and in Llandudno.
Bosses at the SLC have refused to confirm which sites the four people, who were fired over the last five years, worked at.
Some staff at SLC are trained to use social networks to interact with applicants and deliver interactive services to students.
The Student Loans Company said all four were dismissed after disciplinary action was taken.
Mhairi Docherty, the head of human resources at the company, said: “Our staff are expected to behave and communicate with other employees, customers and the wider public - whether through social media or any other communications channels - in a professional and responsible manner.
“SLC does not tolerate abusive behaviour or threatening behaviour and we are committed to dealing robustly and appropriately with any cases of related misconduct to protect our customers and staff.”
