Darlington community venue The Bridge celebrates first birthday
A COMMUNITY venue that has become a hub for the arts in Darlington has celebrated its first birthday.
The Bridge – Centre for Visual Arts, which stands at the corner of Yarm Road and Hundens Lane, has been transformed in the last year from an empty to shell into a vibrant hub for artists and a community meeting place.
Formed by a company of artists and arts groups that had previously been based in the former Darlington Arts Centre, in Vane Terrace, The Bridge has been spruced up with the help of volunteers and fitted out with a wide variety of art equipment.
Artists and service users gathered together today (Saturday) to mark the first year and to prepare for a new season of art classes, which begin on September 16.
The Bridge offers courses in a wide range of artistic mediums, from traditional fine art to rag rugging, jewellery making and pottery classes, all lead by professional artists.
The centre also runs media classes, including digital photography, web design and business classes.
Lisa Jeffries, from The Bridge, said: “The last year has seen The Bridge developing and we now have lots of people on our courses, it’s getting quite busy.
“Artists have taken the initiative to run the courses themselves and we have a wide range of art genres on offer – there is something for everyone.
“We are really trying to maximise what can be done in the building and we have ideas about how to develop the outside space.”
A full list of the courses offered at the centre from September 16 can be found at thebridgedarlington.org.uk The centre also offers a free eight week Open Arts Studio course, which allows people to try a number of different skills and support their mental wellbeing.
