RAF personnel take flight across Europe in bangers
3:11pm Thursday 29th August 2013 in News
Personnel from an RAF base are gearing up to race across Europe in cars costing less than £250.
Seven staff from RAF Leeming, near Bedale, North Yorkshire, will form two teams to compete in the Banger Run Movie Car Challenge to raise funds for the Help for Heroes charity.
Personnel from the base are organising the annual event, which will include driving on some of Europe’s most challenging roads, such as the Furka Pass, in Switzerland.
There will be 28 teams from across the UK taking part in this year’s movie-themed event, with designs including RAF Leeming’s Austin Powers-style cars.
Event organiser, senior aircraftman Paul Buckley, said: “There will be some seriously long days driving on some serious roads. This is not a holiday; however it is an adventure for an amazing cause.”
The banger movie cars will set off from Kent on September 7. The teams will travel through Germany, Switzerland, Monaco, France and aim to finish in Barcelona, Spain on September 10.
Each team has raised a minimum of £500 towards for Help for Heroes, which provides support to personnel who have suffered from life-changing injuries in the line of duty.
