Farmer's daughter uses barn as venue for pop-up diner
A FARMER'S daughter has picked upon an ideal place for diners to graze.
For Katy Holmes has set up a pop-up restaurant in an old barn at the former Birstwith Strawberry Farm, near Harrogate, which offers just one sitting a day, Thursday to Sunday.
The 29-year-old, the brains behind the Hay Bale Diner, is serving a four-course set menu that celebrates all things English with a retro American twist in the farm's barn.
She developed a passion for local produce while growing up on her dad's dairy farm.
"I have actually quite surprised myself how we have managed to transform the place," she said.
"We are cooking in what was the strawberry farm shop, which has been derelict for the past three-and-a-half years and we have got it looking really quite cosy now.
"There are fairy lights around the foliage that's coming through the roof, we've got heaters and blankets if they're needed, and we've created shelves out of old strawberry crates."
In the past Ms Holmes has worked in the fashion industry in London and as a private chef in the Alps, London and Scotland.
But at the Hay Bale Diner she is offering food in a unique setting.
Dishes served over the opening weekend included canapÉs of Swaledale cheese with green bean chutney, pear and candied walnut; a tempura Whitby haddock taco starter and a honey baked ham with new potatoes crushed with herb and watercress butter.
By their very definition pop-up restaurants are temporary, and have grown in popularity over the years.
On Thursday to Saturday sittings are at 7pm for 7.30pm, and on Sundays at 12.30pm for 1pm but only until September 15. Tickets are £25.
Tickets cost £25 and include a welcome cocktail, three courses, coffee and either canapÉs or petit fours.
