Last chance to see Green Howards Museum before major refurbishment
A MILITARY museum is preparing to undergo major refurbishment works that will see it closed for almost a year after the end of August, but visitors will have the chance to have one last look for free.
Earlier this year the museum received £974,600 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), giving the go ahead for exciting plans to dramatically improve what it offers to its visitors, in order to keep the history of the Green Howards alive.
From August 26 to 31 it is free to enter the museum, if people sign up to receive its newsletter, which will mean they will also receive updates on the redevelopment project.
Lynda Powell, director of the Green Howards Museum, says: “This is a chance for people to experience the before and after effect of the museum’s make-over, and it’s an opportunity for us to say thank you for everyone’s support over the last forty years.
“As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the museum it is also the last chance for visitors to see the exhibition which explores the history of the building and our plans for the future.”
The museum will be open 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday.
The Green Howards Museum, located in the Grade I listed Trinity Church in a Conservation Area in Richmond, tells the story of the illustrious Green Howards Regiment from its very beginnings to the present day and its collection spans three centuries of history in times of peace and conflict.
It houses artefacts and photographs, and boasts a stunning display of more than 3,750 medals and awards including Victoria Crosses and George Crosses.
New displays will be created throughout the museum, including the museum’s uniform collection –described by British historian, Dr David Chandler, as “undoubtedly the finest regimental collection in the country”.
There will also be interactive displays including lift-flaps and pull-out draws to make the museum more appealing to children.
New facilities, including toilets and a lift, will also be installed and it is expected to re-open in autumn next year.
