THE FAMILY of a little girl who has been battling an aggressive cancer have been given the “magical” news they have been waiting for – that her cancer has not returned.
Fraja Simpson, five, can now enjoy the last of her summer holidays with her siblings and parents before starting year one at Leeming Community RAF Primary School in September with her friends.
Her parents Garry and Michelle Simpson said they were delighted to hear Fraja’s condition was stable and that they had made the right decision to stop her treatment for the moment.
Fraja underwent MIBG scans at Leeds General Infirmary to see if her rare neuroblastoma with MYCN amplification tumour has remained stable.
In June, consultants cancelled a second, stronger round of highly toxic chemotherapy for Fraja, after discovering the cancer was not presenting like most forms of neuroblastoma, saying the risks of the treatment, such as developing a secondary cancer and infertility, outweighed its benefits.
She will still have to undergo rigorous testing over the next five years to make sure the cancerous cells in her body do not grown - this would be classed as a relapse, and her chances of recovery would be much lower.
Fraja’s next round of tests will take place in November – but until then she and her family can relax.
Mrs Simpson said: “Overwhelming relief is what we feel today. When we were sitting in our oncologist’s room waiting to hear if everything is okay I felt as though I couldn’t breathe and I honestly thought I was going to pass out.
“Then he said those magical words that they made the right decision with Fraja, she looks fantastic and her scan pictures were all perfect.
“My beautiful, excitable, laughing child has a future. We were told everyone is cautiously optimistic but those are the best words I have heard in a long time.”
She added: “We will still be fundraising very hard to raise the £500,000 as it still needs to be in place so we have the relapse money ready to take her where her treatment can be offered.
“The only thing that has changed is that we have been given a tiny bit of hope and I hold on to this very tightly.”
