Village pub closure 'a sign of the times'
THE loss of another village pub is a blow to the community, according to the chairman of the local parish council.
The Dog and Gun, at Etherley, near Bishop Auckland, closed its doors for the last time earlier this month and its new owner plans to convert the building into a house.
Peter Ray, chairman of Etherley Parish Council, said it was the latest community facility to be lost to the village.
“It's a shame. It is something else that has gone from the community," he said.
"We have no Post Office, no shop and no pub. It is just dead at this end of the village, it is a sign of the times.”
Regulars now have the option of enjoying a pint at Etherley Cricket Club or The Sportsman, in neighbouring Toft Hill.
