Darlington couple reach another milestone
A DARLINGTON couple have proved it takes two to tango as they prepare to celebrate their sapphire wedding anniversary.
George and Dorothy Callender, from Darlington, met at a dance hall in the town when they were both 16 and have been together ever since.
Mrs Callender said: “We were at a dance night and at first I wasn’t interested. He just kept coming back to ask me to dance so in the end I did, and were together for about three years before we married.
“We have a lot of love for each other.”
The couple, who are now 87, married in 1948 and have two children, Michael and Geoffrey, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Before they retired, Mr Callender worked as a plumber before becoming a senior superintendent at the Water Board and Mrs Callender worked in sales.
They enjoy dancing and travelling, and lived in South Africa for two-and-a-half years in the 1980s.
The pair plan to celebrate their 65-year landmark today (Wednesday, August 21) with a meal at the Kings Hotel, in Darlington.
