MP William Hague expresses "regret" at closure of Rural Payments Agency in Northallerton
RICHMOND MP William Hague has expressed his regret at the impending closure of the Government's Rural Payments Agency offices in Northallerton, with the loss to the town of 350 jobs.
Although staff have been offered alternative employment at RPA facilities in York or Newcastle, it is thought many employees will not or cannot take up the invitation.
The RPA intends to exercise the lease break of the offices they currently occupy at Alverton Court as the site is too big for its needs. Mr Hague, said that it was "a very disappointing decision" for his constituents, adding: “I had already put to Defra the strong concerns of my constituents and the case for maintaining their operations in Northallerton. It is very regrettable that the RPA have been unable to secure an improvement to their lease.
"I will do everything I can to make sure that every assistance is being given to employees to ensure a smooth transition for all concerned and will be writing to the Secretary of State for Defra, the Rt Hon Owen Paterson, to ask him to do everything possible to ensure they are well looked after.”
